Social Network Investigations an Background Checks Webinar

On Wednesday, February 15, 2012, Central Wisconsin ASIS Chapter 067 held its February meeting at CUNA Mutual.

The large group of attendees heard and saw a webinar on Social Network Investigations an Background Checks presented by Cynthia Hetherington of The Hetherington Group.

The information presented and discussed was eye opening and very informative. As the group learned…what once was described as secret, confidential and personal information in now “public information” due to the public’s exchanging personal information over social networks and the open access to social media.

The attendees were provided examples of how social media sources can become a useful tool for researching persons that might be considered for employment, completing Due Diligence on contractors and service companies and finding out what information might be being exchanged about their employers and the own companies.

The webinar offered a list of social searching and tracking sites and video media sites that are currently available to the public.

JANUARY  MEETING

2012 “KICK OFF” MEETING

On Thursday, January 26, 2012 Central Wisconsin ASIS Chapter 067 held its 2012 “Kick Off” meeting at WPS Insurance Company.  The room was filled with a large number of attendees who offered feedback to the Executive Committee about 2011 Chapter activities and provided suggestions for Chapter activities in 2012.

The Executive Committee presented its 2012 Chapter Calendar to the attendees and asked the attendees for comments and suggestions for 2012 program topics, meeting places and times and encouraged the attendees to become more involved in 2012 to help make the Chapter a greater success.

Chairman Michael Ramstack announced that this year, 2012, Chapter 067 is celebrating its 40th Anniversary.  Chairman Ramstack also announced that  Central Wisconsin ASIS Chapter 067′s website was selected “2011 Website Of The Year” from Group Two Chapters by ASIS International.  Chapter 067 is one of 39 chapters around the world that have between 44 and 71 current members. More information about this award will follow.  Congratulations…Chapter 067!

DECEMBER  MEETING

“YEAR END SOCIAL” AND REVIEW

On Wednesday, December 14th Central Wisconsin ASIS Chapter 067 members gathered at the Nitty Gritty Restaurant · Bar for a Year-End Social and Review of 2011 Chapter successes and accomplishments.

Members were provided comments about 2012 Chapter Goals Objectives by Michael Ramstack, Chapter Chairman for 2012.  Members were also presented Region 8B Goals and Objectives by John Harmon, our newly appointed Regional Vice President.

Speaker:  Bradley J. Krueger, IT Risk Management, CUNA Mutual Group

The Central Wisconsin ASIS Chater 067 heard a powerful presentation by Brad Krueger, IT Risk Management, CUNA Mutual Group that emphasized the importance of security professionals working together to protect their companies from cyber attacks.   Mr. Krueger provided “real-life” suggestions for security practicions who are serious about being a part of this important role for their companies.

Brad has been with CUNA Mutual for over 13 years working primarily in IT Risk Management.  In his current role, Brad is responsible for IT investigations, e-Discovery and Disaster Recovery.

OCTOBER  MEETING

Unfortunately due to an emerging security situation in Pakistan, Rashid Ali Malik, Brigadier Pakistan Army (Retired), the scheduled speaker, had to cut short his visit to the United States and had to return to Pakistan.

The scheduled InfraGard/ASIS meeting was held and substitute presenter Special Agent Douglas Raubal provided a very enlightening presentation on National Security Cyber Threats;  including examples of recent incidents that have affected companies in Wisconsin and the City of Madison.

Public and Private Partnership Homeland Security Grant Programs At The Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance

Speaker:  David Duecker, Program Manager, Citizen Corps and Public and Private Partnership Homeland Security, Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance

Mr. Duecker presented information on his work with the U.S.Department of Homeland Security and discuss the changes and trends that are taking place across the country in government programs and policy regarding Homeland Security.

Mr. Duecker also presented information on the Public/Private Partnerships for Community Preparedness and Resilience Program the Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance has created to develop and support state-wide and regional partnerships to enhance community resilience when responding to emergencies.

ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC

On August 25th Central Wisconsin Chapter 067 hosted its Annual Golf Classic at Foxboro Golf Club in Oregon, WI.

Members and guest were greeted to Foxboro with a beautiful Wisconsin summer day and a wonderfully manicured course that would have been a challenge even to a PGA celebrity. In addition to a great day of golf players enjoyed panoramic views of Wisconsin’s endless green and splendorous countryside and a scrumptious pig roast.

MAY MEETING – ASIS International Certification Programs

On Wednesday, May 25, 2011, Rich Bertrang, CPP, Certification Program Committee Chairperson presented an informative overview of the three Certification Programs offered by ASIS International; Certified Protection Professional (CPP®), Professional Certified Investigator (PCI®) and Professional Certified Investigator (PCI®).

The roundtable discussion that followed generated helpful comments and suggestions from members who are already certified and a lot of great questions from those who are preparing to take the examinations this coming fall at the ASIS Annual Seminar in Orlando, FL.

Today’s security professionals are finding security certifications to be a pre-requisite for employment in the security profession.  Central Wisconsin ASIS Chapter 067 Officers and Certification Program Chairperson Rich Bertrang are available to answer questions about the ASIS International Certification Programs and direct members to study materials that will help them prepare for taking the certification examinations.

APRIL MEETING – GET-TOGETHER “HAPPY HOUR”

On Thursday, April 21, 2011, Central Wisconsin Chapter 067 hosted a Happy Hour meeting at the Coliseum Bar on East Olin Avenue in Madison, WI. Attendees and guests had the opportunity to visit with Chapter Officers and Committee Chairpersons in a relaxed and casual setting. The comments received and suggestions offered by the attendees were greatly appreciated and will used by the Chapter Officers and Committee Chairpersons as they plan Chapter events and represent the security industry in Central Wisconsin throughout 2011. A sincere thank you to the members and guests that were able to attend.

MARCH PRIVATE SECURITY/CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROFESSIONAL FORUM

On Wednesday, March 16, the Central Wisconsin ASIS  Chapter hosted a successful Private Security/Criminal Justice Professional Forum for students enrolled in colleges and universities offering Criminal Justice programs and our security industry representatives.

The Forum gave students a chance to meet private security professionals and learn first-hand what type of security career opportunities are available to students graduating with Criminal Justice Degrees.

The Forum also gave representatives from companies that have private security departments and organizations that provide private services to meet these students and representatives from their perspective colleges and universities.

A special thank you is extended to the following colleges and universities and security industry representatives that made this “first-time” event a truly enjoyable experience.  A very special thank you and acknowledgement to the many students who attended.  Last, but not least, a sincere thank you to Covance, Inc. for providing the venue for this wonderful event.

FEBRUARY MEETING

“Understanding the Legal Responsibilities and Requirements of Video Surveillance” was the topic covered during the Central Wisconsin ASIS Chapter meeting held on Wednesday, February 16, 2011.

A large group of chapter members had the privilege to hear a “no-nonsense” and “to-the-point” presentation on the serious risks and obligations users of video surveillance assume when using state-of-the-art surveillance and monitoring systems.

Robert E. Gregg, an attorney with Boardman, Suhr, Curry & Field LLP discussed the serious responsibilities and potential consequences the new Wisconsin Electronic Records Law effective January 1, 2011 brings to all private and public institutions using video surveillance.

Mr. Gregg reiterated the fact that video recordings are “electronic records” and must be managed as electronically stored information (ESI).  Per statute, ESI is described as “Writings, drawings, graphs, charts, photographs, sound recordings, images, and other data or data compilations stored in any medium from which information can be obtained”.

November Webinar and Meeting

On Wednesday, November 17th, our Chapter enjoyed another outstanding ASIS International sponsored webinar.  The webinar – Good to Great – Building High Performance Security Programs was packed full of suggestions and examples of how struggling security programs were re-built into high performance security programs.

These “real-life” examples were provided by Edward P. Halibozek has been with Northrop Grumman Corporation, Tom Langer, Vice President of Security for BAE Systems, Inc. and Charles S. Phalen, Jr.,Director of Security for the Central Intelligence Agency.

Attendees were presented a list of members that have volunteered to serve as 2011 Chapter Officers and Committee Chairperson candidates.  This list will be published on www.asiswisconsin.org prior to the December 15 meeting at which time members will be asked to vote for and approve the our 2011 leadership team.

October ASIS Roundtable Meeting

On Wednesday, October 20th, Central Wisconsin ASIS members and guests enjoyed an informative Roundtable discussion with Mark Considine from Fearing’s Audio, Video and Security on current CCTV system trends and options.

Mark had just returned from the 56th ASIS Seminar and Exhibits in Dallas, TX and was able to offer invaluable information on what products the security industry is currently marketing and selling to the end user in the area of digital and IP cameras as well as small and large scale digital recording and storage systems.

Many of the questions posed by the attendees related to legal issues surrounding the use the  advanced monitoring features offered by IP cameras such as sound recording capabilities.
