Security Data

Martin Holste is the founder and maintainer of the Enterprise Log Search and Archive and StreamDB open source projects on Google Code.  He has over a decade of experience as a security incident response team lead, and has presented at various regional and national security conferences, including the SANS Cyber Security Innovations conference.  He currently works as an architect for Mandiant Corporation.

Security data comes from everywhere; all data is security data.  This talk will describe how to go about getting the raw data that you need and just as importantly, how to make it actionable.  Specifically, methods for collecting traditional sources as well as how to leverage data that isn’t traditionally security data.  The talk will cover not only tricks for getting these sources of data collected, but also how to take the enormous amount of raw information and apply sound hunting and alerting methodologies using readily available tools.

Strategies and procedures at the organizational layer will be discussed, including how the org can best benefit from the security incident response process.

Severe Weather Tracking

Dale Bernstein, Disaster Assessment Team Leader, MidWest NWS Severe Weather/Spotter Class – Basic.

Severe weather can happen anytime. In May 2013, tornadoes devastated parts of central Oklahoma. This outbreak included the deadliest tornado of the year on May 19 in Moore, Oklahoma. In just one month, November 2013, at least 70 tornadoes spanned seven Midwestern states.

Each year, people suffer or are seriously injured by severe weather despite advance warning. We all want the peace of mind of knowing that our families, friends, homes and our businesses are safe and protected from threats of any kind. And while we can’t control where or when the next disaster will hit, we can take action by preparing ourselves for emergencies and learning what actions to take.

Please Note:  This meeting will have to be cancelled if not enough RSVP’s are received by Monday, April 7th.
